It may have been the single deadliest cannon shot in American history. The fort was reduced to a smoking ruin in the blink of an eye and an estimated 270 of its 320 or so inhabitants - men, women and children - were killed. Bodies and parts of bodies were later found lodged in the tops of the tall pine
trees that surrounded the fort.
